What is Artificial Intelligence?
There are so. many. unique ways to use technology to transform students' learning experiences in the classroom. Speech to text, movie making, digital annotation, virtual reality, and an infinite number of educational apps are just the surface of what is available to us as teachers. Check out a list of some of the top up and coming educational apps and websites for the 2018-2019 school year here.
One of the most exciting emerging trends in educational technology is Artificial Intelligence. AI is, in a few words, the development of computer systems' ability to perform tasks that would previously require human intelligence. AI essentially acts as the brain power of a machine. Artificial Intelligence allows machines to "learn," which makes them smarter, faster, and more efficient. The implications of this type of advanced technology goes far beyond the classroom, but let's start there.
AI in the Classroom
To prepare students for the technology-rich future, there are countless meaningful ways to incorporate AI in the classroom. As standards and expectations are raised year after year, it may be time for us to reach out to a limitless resource for help - Artificial Intelligence. Here is a list of AI apps/websites for use in the classroom:
- Recent News - this app studies your reading habits to keep you updated on the latest articles, blogs, etc. that meet your interests.
- Elsa - this app helps to perfect the pronunciation of words in the English Language. It could be a helpful resource for ELL students.
- Siri & Alexa - these tools are more commonly known, but can still be incredibly useful in the classroom. Allowing students to use Siri and Alexa to assist their research is one option.
- Avatar Kids - this robotic device allows absent students (especially those on homebound or medical leave) to experience what is going on in the classroom.
- Seeing AI - this app translates the physical world for students who are visually impaired. A narration of the world around them is created and read aloud.
Alicia,
ReplyDeleteThe overall layout of your blog is appealing to the eye and has a easy to read flow. I was not very familiar with Artifical Intelligence, but after reading your blog I have a better understanding of AI. I like that AI can help provide students the fundamentals of content without direct instruction from the teacher. Do you currently use AI in your classroom? If you do, when/how do you implement it?
Hi Dana,
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting! I'm glad you learned about AI from my blog. I do not currently use AI in my classroom, but I would love to start! That's part of the reason I chose it as my topic for the infographic assignment. I have seen examples of how teachers use AI like Alexa in the classroom, and kids seem to love interacting with "smart" technology. I'm going to continue looking into how to get started with AI next year.
Alexa would be a great tool to use in the classroom. I think of my younger students, and they are constantly asking.... how do you spell this? The students could utilize Alexa to help with this issue, freeing up some of my time.
ReplyDeleteCheck out this list of ways to use Alexa in the classroom! One of them is about spelling :)

Hi Alicia!
ReplyDeleteAfter reviewing your blog post and all of your resources I can definitely say that prior to reading this, I did not really have a strong foundation of what AI is. As we continue adding more opportunities for technology in our classrooms, we are gradually transitioning the responsibility of learning too. I think that incorporating AI would give us an additional push in this.
The idea of Alexa in the classroom is not something that I would've ever imagined when I first started teaching. With that being said; the summer camp that I'm working in this summer uses an Echo in their classroom. I just started with this group so haven't experienced this much, but I look forward to getting new ideas throughout this summer to be able to implement it into my classroom next year.
Do you know if you would start with something like Alexa when you begin implementing AI in your classroom or do you think you would implement something else to start with?
Hi Kristyn!
DeleteThank you so much for reading and commenting. I love what you mentioned about how AI could help us with the transition of the learning responsibility. AI can definitely aid students in becoming less dependent on the teacher, which is one of its greatest strengths!
I would definitely love to start with something like Alexa because it seems less daunting to me. Since Alexa (and devices like it) is so user-friendly, and since some students might already be familiar with how it works, I think it could be a great place to start. If you're interested, here is a list of fun ways to utilize Alexa in the classroom!

Hi Alicia,
ReplyDeleteYour blog really helped me understand some of the uses AI can be used in the classroom with students. I had not thought twice about this emerging trend having the ability to be a part of student learning. With that being said, have you ever thought about AI replacing teachers in the classroom? I read an article that mentioned AI would infiltrate the classroom by almost 50% by 2021....Scary!!!
I am sure as research continues, AI will be able to take on new tasks at schools and could contribute to an improved education system. For example, I look forward to the day that AI applications becoming educational mentors to students, supplying constant engagement and learning opportunities.
